Ms. Barney graduated from Grand Marais High School in 1992. She continued her studies at Grand Valley State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Applied Psychology with a Gender and Women’s Studies minor. During her time at GVSU she took a year off to live in Koln, Germany and later, studied abroad in Costa Rica. After graduation she enrolled in National Service serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA member in Tuscon, Arizona. She returned to Michigan working as a Counselor for high-risk youth before relocating back to the Upper Peninsula, where she studied at Northern Michigan University. Earning a Master of Arts in Education for School Counseling in 2004, she moved to Phoenix, Arizona to assist in the development of an alternative high school for the Peoria Unified School District. In 2007, Ms. Barney returned to her home town to become the Superintendent of Burt Township School District. Her outgoing spirit and interpersonal skills have gifted her with many meaningful experiences and opportunities that she brings into her daily work. Loving work involving youth, she has focused her career on Alternative Education and Counseling, having interned and worked in the field since her undergrad years.
